Germany Approves IRIS-T SLM Integration on F125 Frigates After 2025 Live-Fire Test

The German Bundestag’s Budget Committee approved the integration of Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM missile system onto the Navy’s F125-class (Baden-Württemberg-class) frigates on September 23, 2026. The decision targets what has been the most criticized gap in the German Navy’s open-ocean air-defense capability.
The four-ship F125 class entered service between 2017 and 2020 but has remained limited in air-defense armament ever since; the Budget Committee’s approval formally secures the funding needed to close that gap.
The approval follows a successful live-fire test conducted from the F125 frigate Baden-Württemberg during the “Andøya” Naval Firing Exercise off Norway in October 2025. In a nighttime test, three missiles were fired, and the navalized IRIS-T SLM demonstrator successfully engaged multiple targets.
The F125’s Known Weakness
F125-class frigates were optimized at the design stage for low-intensity littoral operations, leaving them with limited self-defense capability against modern air threats. The threat picture that emerged from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea made this air-defense gap more visible for NATO navies operating similar platforms. To address the weakness, the German Navy selected a navalized version of IRIS-T SLM.
Technical Details
According to Diehl Defence, each F125 frigate will be equipped with two IRIS-T SLM Naval launchers, giving each ship a 32-missile loadout. The demonstrator system was developed from concept to first firing in under ten months. IRIS-T SLM is described as combat-proven through its land-based use in Ukraine, and Diehl Defence expects a prototype launcher for the target system to be ready in 2027.
Significance for NATO Naval Air Defense
The F125 program illustrates a dilemma NATO navies have repeatedly encountered in recent years: platforms designed for low-intensity operations proving inadequate in an environment increasingly dense with drone and cruise-missile threats. Germany’s approach of closing the gap through a system integrated after the fact could serve as a model for other NATO navies facing similar design constraints.
As Turkey develops its own indigenous naval air-defense systems, such as HİSAR-D (naval) and GÖKDENİZ, the design-threat mismatch experienced by the German Navy underscores the importance of designing ship classes from the outset with upgradable air-defense architecture.
The Naval Variant of the IRIS-T Family
IRIS-T SLM was originally developed as a land-based, short-to-medium-range air-defense system and proved its battlefield effectiveness through deliveries to Ukraine. Diehl Defence’s adaptation of the system to a naval platform also allows the same missile family to share common logistics and maintenance infrastructure between land and naval forces — an approach consistent with the “common platform, multiple uses” trend gaining traction across NATO defense budgets.
Germany’s naval modernization program is not limited to the F125 frigates. The next-generation F126-class frigate program and air-defense upgrades to the existing Sachsen-class ships are advancing in parallel. The integration of IRIS-T SLM onto the F125 stands out as one of the most concrete, schedule-defined elements of this broader modernization package.
What Comes Next
Following budget approval, Diehl Defence and BAAINBw (the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support) will move into a detailed contracting process for the phased integration of the missile system across the four F125 frigates. The program will gain a concrete delivery timeline once the prototype launcher, targeted for 2027, is delivered.
