The history of the Sidewinder family: It began in 1956 with the AIM-9B which became operational. It was tested in the Vietnam War and then evolved into AIM-9D, E, F, G, H, J, L, M, P, R versions. Each version retains the basic design of the previous version but updates the infrared search system, systems, and munitions. The AIM-9X was a new step from the next generation. It was completely redeveloped compared to the AIM-9M design from the 1990s and became operational in 2003. Innovations include: Advanced off-axis lock — the pilot does not need to point the aircraft at the target, they can fire from the side using a helmet-mounted guidance system (JHMCS). Thrust vector control — the missile maneuvers suddenly after launch; G forces reach up to 60g+. Imaging infrared search system — older infrared search systems only looked for heat spots; the AIM-9X sees the shape of the enemy aircraft and is resistant to flares.
