What is AIM-9X Sidewinder? A standard short-range infrared air-to-air missile for NATO.

AIM-9X Sidewinder
Short-range air-to-air infrared (IR) missile produced by Raytheon (RTX). The AIM-9 Sidewinder family has been the standard short-range weapon for the United States and NATO countries since 1956. The AIM-9X is the latest version of the family — advanced lock system, helmet-mounted target selection, significantly higher maneuverability. The AIM-9X is in the inventory of Turkish F-16 aircraft, and the local variant BOZDOĞAN will be used in KAAN.

What is AIM-9X Sidewinder?
AIM-9X Sidewinder is a short-range air-to-air infrared (IR) missile produced by Raytheon (RTX). It is a WVR (within visual range) weapon; where the pilot can see the target with the naked eye or through a helmet-mounted guidance system and fire.
The history of the Sidewinder family: It began in 1956 with the AIM-9B which became operational. It was tested in the Vietnam War and then evolved into AIM-9D, E, F, G, H, J, L, M, P, R versions. Each version retains the basic design of the previous version but updates the infrared search system, systems, and munitions.
The AIM-9X was a new step from the next generation. It was completely redeveloped compared to the AIM-9M design from the 1990s and became operational in 2003. Innovations include:
- Advanced off-axis lock — the pilot does not need to point the aircraft at the target, they can fire from the side using a helmet-mounted guidance system (JHMCS).
- Thrust vector control — the missile maneuvers suddenly after launch; G forces reach up to 60g+.
- Imaging infrared search system — older infrared search systems only looked for heat spots; the AIM-9X sees the shape of the enemy aircraft and is resistant to flares.
- Block II — data link, post-launch update, range ≈35 km.
- Block III target — dual-band infrared search system, longer range.
From Turkey’s perspective: Turkish F-16s have AIM-9X in their inventory; the local variant BOZDOĞAN (developed in collaboration between TÜBİTAK SAGE and ASELSAN) for KAAN. BOZDOĞAN is in the same category — a short-range air-to-air missile guided by infrared and compatible with helmet-mounted guidance systems.
