VURAN is a 4×4 mine-resistant multi-purpose tactical wheeled armored vehicle developed by Türkiye’s BMC. With a monocoque armored hull, a V-shaped underbody and shock-absorbing seats, VURAN is designed for high protection against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In Turkish Armed Forces service since 2020, VURAN serves with the Land Forces and Gendarmerie and with the Georgian army, and is used under NATO peacekeeping in Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This dossier compiles VURAN’s delivery process, operators, the shift to an indigenous engine and technical data from open sources.

What is VURAN?

VURAN is a mine-resistant (MRAP-class) multi-purpose tactical wheeled armored vehicle. Its monocoque armored cabin and glass, V-shaped underbody and shock-absorbing seats are designed to push the effect of mine and IED blasts away from the crew. A 9-person capacity and 4×4 drive make it suitable for both personnel transport and patrol.

The vehicle can be fitted with subsystems such as an ASELSAN SARP remote weapon station, a CBRN protection system, fire suppression, smoke mortars and a hydraulic winch — a modular design that makes VURAN a flexible platform configurable for different mission needs.

Which institutions and countries operate it?

VURAN serves with the Turkish military and Gendarmerie and with the security forces of export customers.

Turkish deliveries and the TTZA project

VURAN entered Turkish service in 2020 and deliveries continue steadily. Per open sources, the number of VURAN in the Land Forces has passed 230; under the Tactical Wheeled Armored Vehicle (TTZA) project, a total of 713 VURAN are planned for the Turkish military.

At a ceremony on 10 January 2025, the delivery of 100 tactical wheeled armored vehicles with 95% indigenous engines was completed: 50 indigenous-engine VURAN to the Land Forces, 40 to the Gendarmerie and 10 KİRPİ to the Land Forces.

The shift to an indigenous engine

A key milestone of the VURAN program is fitting the vehicle with an indigenous engine. The first serial VURAN built with the indigenous engine developed by BMC Power were delivered to the Turkish military in early 2025, meaning the vehicle is now largely national not only in hull and systems but in its powertrain.

The indigenous engine is a critical advantage for supply security and export independence: export-permit restrictions a foreign engine maker might impose disappear, and the maintenance chain stays in-country — boosting VURAN’s competitiveness in both domestic and export markets.

Exports and NATO missions

VURAN has also found a place in exports: VURAN armored vehicles produced by the Turkish defense industry were delivered to the Georgian Armed Forces. VURAN has also served under NATO peacekeeping in Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, tested in international operations.

This international use confirms VURAN’s reliability in the field while strengthening Türkiye’s defense cooperation with allied nations. Continued demand in the mine-resistant vehicle class creates new export opportunities for VURAN.

Manufacturer and significance for Türkiye

VURAN is produced by BMC. It is one of the platforms meeting Türkiye’s mine-resistant armored-vehicle needs through domestic production; with the shift to an indigenous engine, it relies on a largely national supply chain from hull to powertrain.

At home, VURAN plays a critical role in protecting troops against mine and IED threats. Through exports and NATO missions it also raises the international visibility of the Turkish defense industry —

VURAN’s mine-resistant design answers a critical need in a modern operating environment where asymmetric threats and IED attacks have become widespread. The V-shaped hull and shock-absorbing seats aim to push blast energy away from the crew and minimize casualties, making the vehicle indispensable especially in internal-security and border operations.

BMC’s shift to an indigenous engine is part of the Turkish defense industry’s goal of nationalizing not just the platform but critical subsystems such as the powertrain. Bringing indigenous-engine vehicles into serial production lowers maintenance and spare-parts costs and removes the need for third-country permits in export contracts.

VURAN’s use in NATO peacekeeping missions shows the vehicle is accepted to international standards and operates reliably across geographies. These references strengthen Türkiye’s position in the mine-resistant vehicle market and open the door to new export opportunities.

The VURAN family was built on the experience BMC gained with its Kirpi MRAP, placing the vehicle’s protection and reliability on a field-proven foundation. The mine-resistant vehicle class has become a globally in-demand segment as asymmetric threats have grown in recent years, and VURAN offers an indigenous solution to that demand.

The vehicle’s modular architecture lets a single platform be adapted to roles from ambulance and command vehicle to mortar carrier and reconnaissance vehicle. This flexibility lets user institutions meet a wide range of needs through a common logistics chain, creating both cost and sustainment advantages.

Bringing indigenous-engine VURAN into serial production is concrete evidence that Türkiye has gained independence not just in the vehicle but in powertrain technology. This keeps the supply chain unbroken in times of crisis and adds the flexibility to sell in exports without being held up by third-country permits.

an operational and strategic gain.
