Navantia Lays Keel of Third F110 Frigate F113 Seven Months Early
Spanish shipbuilder Navantia held a keel-laying ceremony for F113 Menéndez de Avilés, the third ship in the F110-class frigate program, at its Ferrol shipyard. The ceremony was chaired by Admiral Aniceto Rosique, Director General for Armament and Material, and Navantia Chairman Ricardo Domínguez, with Admiral Antonio Piñeiro, Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy, among the attendees.
The milestone was reached seven months ahead of the contractual date, confirming steady progress across the program. The first ship, F111 Bonifaz, is afloat at berth 10 with main systems being installed and commissioned ahead of sea trials, with delivery scheduled for 2028. The second ship, F112 Roger de Lauria, recently completed its main structure and is being prepared for launch later this summer.
The F110-class program is intended to modernize the Spanish Navy’s air defense, anti-submarine warfare and multi-mission capabilities. Staying ahead of schedule is being read as a sign of Spain reinforcing its naval contribution to NATO’s southern flank at a time when European navies are broadly accelerating fleet modernization.
