Career: from the Border Guard to the General Staff
Al-Atta rose through the Sudanese Armed Forces via the Border Guard Forces and served as military attaché in Djibouti, giving him early exposure to the Red Sea security file. After Omar al-Bashir’s ouster on 11 April 2019 he was made Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Military Council. When the council was dissolved on 20 August 2019 and replaced by a mixed civilian-military Sovereignty Council, he retained a seat on the council’s military wing. When fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in the capital in April 2023, al-Atta remained on the army side, staying in Omdurman and taking direct field command of army units across Khartoum State. On 2 April 2026 he was appointed Chief of Staff by presidential decree issued by the Commander-in-Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan; his predecessor General Mohamed Osman al-Hussein was relieved and retired.
Institutional context: the Sudanese Armed Forces
Since April 2023, the SAF has anchored its command hub in Port Sudan and rebuilt its logistics chain through that port. The Chief of Staff reports directly to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who serves both as head of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief. SAF’s modernisation priorities over the past two years have concentrated on unmanned aerial systems, combat-trainer aircraft and armoured platforms. Türkiye’s defence industry is a direct supplier on two of these lines (UAS and munitions).
