HENSOLDT TRML-4D Radar: Specs, IRIS-T Integration and Ukraine Performance

The TRML-4D (Transportable Radar Multi Layer — 4th Dimension) is HENSOLDT’s flagship short-range air defense radar: a solid-state AESA system capable of simultaneously tracking 450 targets across drone swarms, ballistic missiles, artillery shells, and conventional aircraft.
Technical Specifications
Operating in C-band (4–8 GHz) with an active electronically scanned array, the TRML-4D requires no rotating antenna — its beam steers electronically at millisecond update rates. Key parameters:
- Detection range: up to ~250 km for large targets; optimized for small radar cross-section targets at tactically relevant ranges
- Simultaneous track capacity: 450 air targets
- Minimum RCS: ~0.01 m² (small UAVs and mortar rounds)
- Frequency band: C-band, robust in adverse weather
- Mobility: truck-mounted, deployable/recoverable within 30 minutes
Operational Role Within IRIS-T SLM
TRML-4D is a search and early-warning radar, not a fire-control radar. In the Bundeswehr and Ukrainian IRIS-T SLM batteries, it detects and classifies incoming threats, hands off target coordinates to the fire-control radar, and closes the post-engagement assessment loop. The combination of TRML-4D detection speed and IRIS-T SLM’s precision intercept missile explains the system’s reported success against Shahed-136 drone attacks.
Turkish Equivalent: ÇAFRAD
ASELSAN’s ÇAFRAD (Multi-Function Active Phased Array Radar) is the closest Turkish functional equivalent — combining air defense tracking with artillery location in a single phased-array platform. Full series production maturity and ECCM depth remain an ongoing development effort.
