HENSOLDT TRS-4D Naval Radar: Germany’s K130 Corvette AESA Multifunction System

The TRS-4D (Tactical Radar System — 4th Dimension) is HENSOLDT’s naval AESA multifunction radar, designed for warships and currently operational on Germany’s K130 Braunschweig-class corvettes. It addresses the evolving naval threat profile — sea-skimming anti-ship missiles, low-altitude cruise missiles, and drone swarms.
Technical Specifications
TRS-4D shares the same C-band AESA core as the TRML-4D but is adapted for naval environments with hardened electronics, salt-water resistant materials, and software customized for ship motion compensation. Key parameters:
- Detection range: 200 km+ (large targets); optimized for sea-skimmers at low altitude
- Simultaneous tracking: 1,000+ air and surface targets
- Surface search mode: small surface contacts and periscope detection
- IFF integration: full friend-or-foe discrimination
- ECCM: frequency agility and signal diversity
Operational on K130 Corvettes
Germany’s five K130 Braunschweig-class corvettes use TRS-4D as their primary surveillance and fire-control radar. Additional K130 units are on order. Combat-level deployment within NATO fleet exercises has validated the system’s performance in contested maritime environments.
Turkish Equivalents
ASELSAN’s ÇAFRAD-D (naval variant) and SMSR (Shipborne Multi-mode Surveillance Radar) are Turkey’s closest functional equivalents, being integrated into the Milli Muharip Gemi (MMG) national frigate program. Series production maturity and multi-threat discrimination depth are the key differentiators compared to TRS-4D.
