HENSOLDT ASR-NG Airport Radar: Solid-State S-Band ATC System in 60+ Countries

HENSOLDT ASR-NG Airport Radar: Solid-State S-Band ATC System in 60+ Countries
Show Article Summary

ASR-NG (Airport Surveillance Radar — New Generation) is HENSOLDT’s solid-state digital airport radar, replacing mechanically rotating disk radars with an electronically scanned S-band system deployed at over 200 airports across 60+ countries.

Why “New Generation”?

Conventional airport radars rely on a physically rotating antenna — a mechanical failure point with slow update rates. ASR-NG eliminates rotating parts entirely. Electronic beam steering drops update intervals below one second, extends maintenance cycles, and improves signal integrity in rain, snow, and low-visibility conditions.

Technical Specifications

  • Frequency band: S-band (2–4 GHz) — the ICAO standard for ATC primary radar
  • Detection range: ~120 km (civil airspace standard)
  • 3D data: range, azimuth, and elevation in a single return
  • Installed base: 60+ countries, 200+ installations
  • Military variant ECCM: active electromagnetic interference resistance plus IFF integration

Dual-Use Architecture

ASR-NG’s civilian version meets ICAO Annex 10 standards for ATC primary surveillance. The military version adds ECCM, full IFF integration, and hostile aircraft detection modes. Countries operating both civil and military airports can standardize on a single radar family — simplifying logistics and training while meeting both ICAO and NATO requirements.
