Germany’s next air-defence frigate has cleared a design milestone, and its most striking claim is what it is meant to shoot at. TKMS chief executive Oliver Burkhard said the F127 design has been “significantly advanced,” with the first ship deliverable by the mid-2030s if a contract arrives on time. The vessel is being designed to intercept ballistic missiles beyond the Earth’s atmosphere.

Why exoatmospheric interception is hard

Ballistic missiles spend most of their flight above roughly 100 kilometres, outside the atmosphere. Intercepting there — exoatmospheric interception — is a different engineering problem from engaging a target in air. With no atmosphere, aerodynamic control surfaces are useless; the interceptor must steer with small thrusters in its terminal phase and destroy the target by direct impact, at closing speeds measured in kilometres per second.

Few naval platforms can do it. U.S. Aegis-equipped Arleigh Burke destroyers carry SM-3 interceptors for the task, and Japan’s Maya and Atago classes share the capability. Europe has none in service: Dutch and Danish ships can track ballistic missiles, but the interception itself depends on American systems.

The programme

F127 is built on TKMS’s MEKO A400 design and developed jointly by TKMS, Rheinmetall, the German defence ministry and the German Navy. Its primary role is long-range air and ballistic missile defence; secondary tasks include protecting naval formations and feeding NATO’s integrated air-defence network.

The design reportedly retains growth margin for future sensors and effectors — standard practice on modern frigates, where power generation and cooling capacity are deliberately oversized so that radars and missiles can be replaced across a thirty-year service life without cutting into the hull.

TKMS says around 90 percent of the programme’s added value would be generated inside Germany, spanning shipbuilding, systems integration, sensors, propulsion and electronics. What has not happened yet is the contract award. The design is advanced; the order is not signed.

A gap Germany needs to close

The German Navy currently rests its air-defence capability on three F124 Sachsen-class frigates, commissioned in the early 2000s and now in the later stretch of their service lives. The F125 Baden-Württemberg class was optimised for low-intensity stabilisation work and carries no comparable air-defence fit.

Set against rising threat perception in the Baltic and North Sea — Russian missile deployments at Kaliningrad, submarine activity in the Baltic — that leaves a capability gap German planners have moved up their priority list. A mid-2030s delivery still implies a service-life extension for the F124s in the meantime.

The MEKO thread to Turkey

The MEKO design philosophy underpinning F127 is familiar in Turkish shipbuilding. Developed by Blohm+Voss around modular weapon and sensor placement, MEKO architecture underpins the Turkish Navy’s Yavuz and Barbaros-class frigates, several of which were built at Gölcük Naval Shipyard — the foundation of Turkey’s modern warship construction capability.

Turkey is pursuing area air defence at sea through the TF-2000 destroyer, built around ASELSAN’s ÇAFRAD radar family and ROKETSAN’s SİPER interceptor, while the İstanbul-class frigates cover the medium-range tier. Sea-based exoatmospheric interception is not currently on the Turkish agenda. Europe’s move toward its own capability in that layer says something about how allies now view dependence on U.S. missile defence.
