What happened

According to Russian Telegram channels citing local residents, Ukraine launched drone attacks across several Russian regions overnight. A large fire was reported at the NS-Oil refinery in the community of Novospasskoye in Ulyanovsk region, with strikes targeting the refinery and logistics infrastructure.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said air defences intercepted 223 Ukrainian drones overnight over 19 regions, occupied Crimea and the Sea of Azov, listing Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Orenburg, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Tver, Tula and Ulyanovsk regions and the Moscow region. A three-year-old boy died in a fire caused by a drone crash in the suburbs of Voronezh, and his parents were injured.

System and operational context

Since 2024 Ukraine has systematically pursued a long-range drone campaign against Russian oil refineries, fuel depots and logistics hubs, aiming at economic and military-logistics targets far behind the front. The one-way (kamikaze) drones used are favoured for strategic deep strikes thanks to their low cost and long range.

Russia’s claim to have downed hundreds of drones in a single night shows both the scale of the attacks and the volume of interceptor resources the defender expends. The mass use of cheap drones raises the depletion and cost-imbalance problem of expensive air-defence missiles for both sides.
