The Libyan National Army has signed a contract with a Turkish company for a land border security system.
The main command of the Libyan National Army (LNA) has signed a contract with a Turkish company for the first phase of a comprehensive management and surveillance system along the land border. According to a statement released on July 20, 2026, by the military media department of the Main Command in Benghazi, the first phase of the project will cover 275 kilometers of Libya’s land borders.
The statement notes that the process is being carried out under the supervision of Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar. The name of the Turkish company, the contract value, and details of the technologies used are not disclosed in the official announcement.
What the system is supposed to do
According to the official statement, the comprehensive system is designed to enhance the fight against human trafficking, illegal migration, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, organized crime, and other cross-border criminal activities. Such comprehensive solutions typically combine stationary observation towers, optical-electronic/thermal cameras, and radars with data collection from sensors at a command and control center.
Why this is important
Libya has thousands of kilometers of land borders with Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia. The southern and eastern deserts of the country have long been considered vulnerable to smuggling and the movement of armed groups. Technological border monitoring is intended to enhance surveillance capabilities in this vast and complex territory.
The contract indicates the continued presence of the Turkish defense technology company in the North African border security market. In recent years, Turkey has offered comprehensive border surveillance and management solutions to several countries; as the details are not disclosed, the scope of this contract will become clearer in subsequent stages.
