Malaysia is nearing the acquisition of the MBDA VL MICA air defense missile for its LCS frigates.
The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has reached the final stage of purchasing the vertical launch air defense missile VL MICA from MBDA to equip its Maharaja Lela class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) with air defense capabilities. According to Navy News, the Secretary General of the Malaysian Ministry of Defence, Datuk Lukman Hakim Ali, signed the acceptance letter (Surat Setuju Terima / SST) with MBDA France on July 24, 2026, at the Farnborough International Airshow.
The Malaysian Ministry of Defence described the acquisition as “a key supplementary contract for the LCS project to ensure that the ships have air defense capabilities.” For its part, MBDA stated that “a contract must be signed without delay to secure the timeline for the manufacturing of VL MICA.”
What VL MICA Changes
VL MICA is a vertical launch system that provides ships with 360-degree air defense in all weather conditions. It can counter anti-ship missiles, precision-guided munitions, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The system is offered with two seeker options: active radar (MICA RF) and infrared imaging (MICA IR).
According to figures mentioned by Navy News, the range of the older version reaches 20 km; while the VL MICA NG version with a range of 40 km is not part of the current order for Malaysia. The vertical launch containers with “fire and forget” capability allow the ship to respond to threats from all directions simultaneously.
Long-Term LCS Program
The Maharaja Lela class is based on the Gowind 2500 design from the French company DCNS (now known as Naval Group). Malaysia selected the design in late 2011, and a production contract was signed with Boustead Naval Shipyard in July 2014. Although the program has experienced delays, it has gained momentum recently: the lead ship Maharaja Lela began sea trials in April 2026, while the third ship was launched in February 2026.
Completing the purchase of air defense missiles is a crucial step in transforming a program that has long been criticized for its lack of weapon systems into an operational combat vessel.

As the naval modernization accelerates across Southeast Asia, VL MICA air defense systems remain a priority for regional navies. The acquisition indicates the ongoing competition among suppliers offering solutions in the same category.
