Malaysia is approaching the VL MICA air defense missile from MBDA for its LCS frigates.
The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has reached the final phase of acquiring the vertical launch air defense missile VL MICA from the French company MBDA, to equip its littoral combat ships (LCS) of the Maharaja Lela class with air defense capabilities. According to Naval News, the Secretary General of MINDEF, Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, signed the Acceptance Letter (Surat Setuju Terima / SST) with MBDA France on July 24, 2026, at the Farnborough International Airshow.
MINDEF described the acquisition as “an essential supplementary contract for the LCS project that ensures the ships have air defense capabilities.” MBDA, for its part, noted that the contract “must be signed without delay to secure the manufacturing schedule of the VL MICA.”
What the VL MICA changes
The VL MICA is a vertical launch system that provides ships with 360-degree air defense in any weather conditions. It can engage anti-ship missiles, precision-guided munitions, aircraft, and drones. The system is offered with two seeker options: active radar (MICA RF) and image infrared (MICA IR).
According to figures cited by Naval News, the range of the classic version reaches up to 20 km; the VL MICA NG variant, with a range of 40 km, is not part of Malaysia’s current order. The “fire and forget” type vertical launch containers allow the ship to respond simultaneously to threats from all directions.
A long-term LCS program
The Maharaja Lela class is based on the Gowind 2500 design from the French company DCNS (now Naval Group). Malaysia selected the design in late 2011, and the production contract was signed with Boustead Naval Shipyard in July 2014. Although the program has been marked by delays, it has recently gained momentum: the lead ship Maharaja Lela began sea trials in April 2026, while the third ship was launched in February 2026.
Completing the acquisition of the air defense missile is considered a critical step in transforming a program long criticized for the absence of its weapon systems into an operational combat ship.
Regional context
As naval modernization accelerates in Southeast Asia, point/area air defense systems like the VL MICA remain among the priorities of the region’s navies. The acquisition reflects the ongoing competition among suppliers offering solutions of the same class.
