M109A7 Paladin

The newest upgraded version of the 60-year-old M109 family

Manufactured by BAE Systems 155 mm/39 caliber tracked self-propelled howitzer. The standard artillery platform of the U.S. Army since the 1960s, the most recent version of the M109 family. A version in which the engine, electronics, and fire control system have been completely updated from the old M109A6 Paladin. Due to the 39-caliber tube, the range is lower than that of the PzH 2000 / K9 / Storm, but the operational quantity and logistics chain of the U.S. maintain its value.

What is the M109A7 Paladin?

60-year-old self-propelled howitzer of the USA

The M109 Paladin is a 155 mm tracked self-propelled howitzer that entered service with the U.S. Army in 1963. It has continuously served as the standard artillery platform for the U.S. for over 60 years. The M109A7 is the latest version of the family; it supports the production line by upgrading older variants (M109A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6).

New features that came with the M109A7 (compared to A6):

  • Completely new chassis — reinforced design borrowed from the M2 Bradley.
  • More powerful engine and electrical system — for modern avionics.
  • New fire control computer — digital and faster.
  • Integration of “Excalibur” precision munitions — reaches a range of 50 km with GPS guidance.
  • Stronger armor — high resistance to explosives and shrapnel.

The biggest weakness of the M109A7 is its barrel length L/39 (39 caliber). Modern counterparts, such as the PzH 2000, K9, and Storm, have L/52 barrels; this difference corresponds to a 10 km range difference. Considering this capability, the U.S. Army initiated the ERCA (Extended Range Cannon Artillery) project — L/58 barrel, aiming for a range of over 70 km; the program was canceled in 2024. Currently, the U.S. is looking towards the European market for modern L/52 SPHs.

The U.S. has supplied Ukraine with M109A6/A7 howitzers. Although their range remains short compared to more modern European SPHs, they have demonstrated their value due to the existing ammunition and training infrastructure.
