Leclerc XLR: France Redesigns Its Tank Based on Ukraine War Lessons

Default post image
Show Article Summary

The Leclerc XLR modernization program incorporates direct lessons from Ukraine: COMBAT 2 digital network, PASEO NG 360° commander sight, GALIX active protection (softkill), and modular roof armor. First XLR vehicles delivered to the French Army in 2025. Still 3-crew with autoloader.

30 Years of Autoloader Legacy

France has operated Leclerc with an autoloader since 1991 — against the 4-crew standard of M1, Leopard, and Challenger. XLR continues this heritage; 12 rds/min and 3 crew remains its competitive edge.

Post-Ukraine Updates

COMBAT 2 C4I network, PASEO NG 360° commander sight, GALIX active protection (softkill), and modular roof armor panels are direct responses to Ukraine war observations.

Turkey’s OTOKAR ALTAY competes in the same weight class. Leclerc’s 30+ years of autoloader operational experience is a valuable reference for the ALTAY program.
