US Navy Turns to L3Harris VAMPIRE for Littoral Counter-Drone Defense

The US Navy has selected L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) to supply its VAMPIRE™ counter-unmanned systems (C-UxS) family for littoral defense missions. The selection was disclosed in the company’s official press release dated September 8, 2026, and is described as part of a broader, expanding integrated C-UxS architecture the United States is building against unmanned aerial threats.
Tony Calderon, President of L3Harris Targeting & Sensor Systems, said VAMPIRE has been ruggedized to withstand the environmental stresses specific to maritime operations. His comment points to an adaptation process that accounts for salt exposure, humidity, and vibration loads as the system moves from its land-based origins toward shipborne and coastal use.
VAMPIRE first gained recognition as a lightweight, vehicle-mountable counter-drone solution designed for ground forces. Its extension into a maritime configuration signals the Navy’s broader effort to rapidly scale up defenses against the rising threat of small unmanned aerial systems along contested coastlines.
According to Naval News, the system incorporates a WESCAM MX-10 electro-optical/infrared reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition (RSTA) sensor paired with a four-cell launcher. That configuration allows operators to visually confirm targets and guide low-cost precision munitions during engagement. The same report notes that a variant integrated onto an unmanned surface vessel (USV) is also planned.
