M142 HIMARS is a wheeled multiple launch rocket / missile system built by US-based Lockheed Martin. Carrying six guided rockets or one ATACMS missile on a single truck, it gained global fame from 2022 in the Ukraine war with its ‘shoot-and-scoot’ capability. This dossier compiles which countries operate it, its delivery timeline, its relationship with Türkiye (the indigenous ROKETSAN ÇNRA family) and technical data from open sources.
Though Türkiye does not operate HIMARS, ROKETSAN’s indigenous multiple rocket launcher and BORA missile family is the Turkish counterpart of this capability; the dossier includes that comparison.

What is HIMARS?
HIMARS is a multiple launch rocket system mounted on an FMTV 6×6 truck, rapidly deployable and air-transportable (C-130). It can fire six GMLRS guided rockets or one ATACMS ballistic missile per load, then reposition immediately after firing to avoid counter-fire.
Its real strength is striking point targets (command posts, logistics, bridges) tens to hundreds of kilometers away with precision-guided munitions. This ‘deep strike’ capability made HIMARS one of the most effective weapons of modern land warfare.
Which countries operate it?
HIMARS became a system whose demand exploded after the Ukraine war. The table summarises operators per open sources.

Poland is the largest export buyer with 486 additional launchers ordered. NATO’s eastern-flank countries are also quickly acquiring HIMARS.
How many and where delivered?
HIMARS entered US Army service in 2005 and was long used mainly by the US and a few allies. The combat impact of the systems provided to Ukraine in 2022 exploded global demand.
Poland ordered 486 more after its initial 20 launchers; Romania, the Baltics, Australia, Singapore and Italy also joined the operators, with the Netherlands, Norway, Taiwan and Canada queuing as new buyers.
Relationship with Türkiye: indigenous ÇNRA and BORA
Türkiye does not operate HIMARS. The Turkish Armed Forces meet this capability with fully indigenous ROKETSAN systems: the Multiple Rocket Launcher (ÇNRA) family fires rockets and missiles of various calibers from 10 to 280 km.
In this family, Kasırga (TRG-300) reaches 120 km and the guided TRLG-230 70 km, while the BORA missile reaches 280 km — an indigenous ballistic missile in the class of the US ATACMS. So Türkiye is not dependent in the ‘deep strike’ capability HIMARS provides; it even exports its own systems.

Comparison with ROKETSAN ÇNRA
HIMARS and ROKETSAN’s ÇNRA do the same job differently: precise, long-range land fire support. HIMARS stands out for modularity and ATACMS/PrSM, while the Turkish system offers a wide munition range from 122 mm to 300 mm and 280 km with BORA.
The most important difference is strategic: HIMARS is an imported system, while Türkiye’s ÇNRA and BORA are fully indigenous and exportable — making Türkiye a supplier in long-range artillery/rockets.
Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin
HIMARS is built by US-based Lockheed Martin, developed as the wheeled, lighter and rapidly deployable version of the heavier tracked M270 MLRS.
After its success in Ukraine, production demand multiplied and Lockheed Martin accelerated output. This demand surge also increased export opportunities for indigenous producers like ROKETSAN.
Significance
HIMARS proved in Ukraine how decisive precision rocket/missile capability is in modern war. With a broad operator network, it became one of the symbols of NATO’s land firepower.
For Türkiye, even without a direct operator relationship, HIMARS is a benchmark showing why the indigenous ÇNRA and BORA are strategic; Türkiye both meets its own needs and exports in this field.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries operate HIMARS?
Besides the USA: Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Singapore, Jordan, UAE, Australia and Italy; the Netherlands, Norway, Taiwan and Canada have approved or ordered it.
Why is HIMARS famous?
Since 2022, the M142 HIMARS gained global fame in the Ukraine war by precisely striking Russian logistics and command nodes from afar, using ‘shoot-and-scoot’ to fire and reposition before counter-fire.
What is HIMARS’s range?
With standard GMLRS guided rockets, 70-150 km; with the ATACMS missile, 300 km; with the developing PrSM, range will exceed 500 km.
Does Türkiye operate HIMARS?
No. Türkiye fields ROKETSAN’s indigenous multiple rocket launcher (ÇNRA) family instead — Kasırga (TRG-300), the guided TRLG-230 and the 280 km BORA missile — an equivalent and in some respects longer-range capability.
How do HIMARS and Türkiye’s indigenous systems compare?
ROKETSAN’s ÇNRA fires rockets/missiles of various calibers from 10-280 km. The BORA missile is a ballistic missile in the ATACMS class — showing Türkiye is not dependent in this capability.
What is the Turkish equivalent of HIMARS?
ROKETSAN’s TRG-300 Kasırga and TRLG-230 are the indigenous counterparts of HIMARS; the BORA is the indigenous ballistic missile corresponding to ATACMS.
