HAVELSAN Links USV-12 and SAGAN UAV in Turkish Naval Strike Demonstration
Show Article Summary

Quick take: Turkish defense company HAVELSAN has linked VN Maritime’s USV-12 unmanned surface vessel with ASİSGUARD’s SAGAN unmanned aerial vehicle under a single command-and-control architecture. SAGAN took off autonomously from the USV-12’s deck and released a 60 mm mortar round on a designated target, completing the mission without incident.

What was demonstrated

According to HAVELSAN, the USV-12 operated with autonomous navigation throughout the exercise. The SAGAN UAV launched from the vessel’s deck on its own, then delivered the 60 mm munition onto the assigned target.

Target engagement itself stayed under operator control, while take-off and transit were autonomous. That split reflects HAVELSAN’s stated approach to unmanned weapons employment, which keeps a human in the loop for the firing decision even as other mission phases run autonomously.

Two manufacturers, one architecture

The notable part of the trial is that the two platforms come from different companies. VN Maritime builds the USV-12 surface vessel, while ASİSGUARD develops the SAGAN UAV. HAVELSAN’s command-and-control, mission management and autonomy software coordinated both systems over a shared network, rather than each platform running its own stand-alone control chain.

HAVELSAN describes the architecture as aligned with NATO interoperability standards, built to let unmanned systems from different manufacturers operate under one command structure without bespoke integration for every new platform pairing.

Where this fits in HAVELSAN’s unmanned portfolio

The trial extends work HAVELSAN has carried out over roughly the past year on unmanned maritime and air integration. The company’s ADVENT combat management system already links TCG Anadolu with Bayraktar TB3 unmanned combat aircraft, sharing a common tactical picture across the task group. In February 2026, the armed SANCAR unmanned surface vessel entered Turkish Navy service.

The USV-12/SAGAN pairing moves that track record in a different direction: integration is no longer limited to HAVELSAN’s own hardware, but now extends to systems built by other Turkish defense manufacturers, in line with the Presidency of Defence Industries’ long-stated preference for open architectures and multiple suppliers.

Why it matters

A UAV launching from a small surface vessel and striking a target with a mortar round shows that unmanned maritime platforms can move beyond reconnaissance into direct fire support. That strengthens the case for low-cost, small air-sea combinations in coastal patrol, port defense and littoral security missions.

It also illustrates that Türkiye’s unmanned systems base is spread across multiple companies — HAVELSAN, ASİSGUARD and VN Maritime among them — that can operate jointly through a shared command layer. For a NATO member, demonstrating that degree of manned-unmanned teaming across vendors feeds directly into the alliance’s broader interoperability discussions.

What is not yet known

HAVELSAN’s statement did not disclose the exact date, location or engagement range of the demonstration. The number of munitions SAGAN carried, the USV-12’s full mission configuration, and whether the trial was tied to a specific exercise or procurement program were likewise not specified.

It remains unclear whether this was a one-off technology demonstration or part of a program the Presidency of Defence Industries is evaluating for acquisition. This article will be updated if further details become available.
