Greece to Acquire Three Embraer C-390 Millennium Transport Aircraft

Greece’s Council for National Security approved a roughly €600 million programme to acquire three Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft to replace its ageing C-130H Hercules fleet.

The development

Greece’s Council for National Security (KYSEA) approved an estimated €600 million procurement programme for three Embraer C-390 Millennium transport aircraft. The deal covers conversion training, initial spares, ground support systems and a multi-year Follow-on Support contract, with an option for three more aircraft.

The programme will replace Greece’s C-130H Hercules fleet. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2027, with all three in service by 2030.

The C-390 Millennium

Developed by Embraer, the C-390 Millennium is a twin-turbofan, multi-role jet transport capable of tactical transport, aerial refuelling and aeromedical evacuation. Its jet engines offer higher speed and range than traditional turboprop transports.

Greece’s acquisition also includes domestic industry participation, transferring in-country maintenance responsibility to Hellenic Aerospace Industry.

Regional significance

The C-390 has emerged as a strong European alternative to the C-130, chosen in recent years by NATO members such as Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria and the Czech Republic. Greece’s entry reinforces that trend. Given rising strategic activity in the Eastern Mediterranean, robust strategic airlift carries weight in the regional balance.
