E-2D Advanced Hawkeye: The Radar Brain of Aircraft Carriers

Yazı Özetini Göster

The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is Northrop Grumman’s 4th-generation carrier-based AEW&C aircraft with AN/APY-9 AESA radar. It tracks 2,000+ air targets simultaneously at 550+ km, forming the command-control backbone of carrier air wing defense. Japan operates 13; France uses it on Charles de Gaulle.

Extending the Sea Horizon

A Burke-class destroyer’s SPY-1D radar works at sea surface level — blind to low-flying cruise missiles below the horizon. The E-2D scans 550+ km from 10,500 m, feeding Aegis with targeting data; the E-2D manages interceptor sequencing.

Japan’s F-35C Partner

As Japan converts Izumo-class ships for F-35B operations, it purchased 13 E-2Ds. Against J-20 and Chinese hypersonic missile threats, the E-2D provides the AEW intelligence foundation Japan’s Pacific strategy requires.

Türk Muadili

Turkey has no carrier-based AEW&C aircraft. Providing AEW&C capability for the TCG Anadolu LHD is an unresolved critical gap. The Turkish Air Force operates the E-7 AEW&C; however, the Navy lacks a dedicated carrier air wing AEW architecture.
