An Israeli military strike on tents for displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip has killed at least 40 people.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli warplanes bombed the tents of displaced civilians near the warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), northwest of Rafah.

According to eyewitnesses, the Israeli military attacked the camp, firing at least eight missiles.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip reported that at least 40 people were killed and dozens were injured in the attack.

Civil defense crews are trying to extinguish the fire that resulted from the bombing and rescue people trapped under the rubble.

The Israeli military, however, stated that the attack was in line with international law and targeted “legitimate targets.”

An army spokesperson said that two senior Hamas commanders were killed in the strike and that reports of civilian casualties are being reviewed.

The attack occurred two days after the UN’s International Court of Justice ordered Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah.

Hamas described the attack as a “horrific massacre” and called on the international community to take action to stop Israel.

The Palestinian Authority also condemned the attack, calling it part of “the genocidal war being waged by Israel against the Palestinian people.”
