It is a short-range infrared (IR) air-to-air missile manufactured by Raytheon (RTX). The AIM-9 Sidewinder family has been the standard short-range air-to-air weapon for the U.S. and NATO countries since 1956. AIM-9X is the most modern version of the family — gimbal head locking, helmet-mounted target selection, much higher maneuverability. In Turkish F-16s, the AIM-9X is in inventory, and for the KAAN, the local alternative BOZDOĞAN will be used.

AIM-9X Sidewinder is a short-range infrared (IR) air-to-air missile manufactured by Raytheon (RTX). It is a WVR (Within Visual Range) weapon; the pilot can see and engage the target with the sight or helmet-mounted display.
The history of the Sidewinder family began with the AIM-9B, which became operational in 1956. It saw combat in the Vietnam War and then evolved through variants AIM-9D, E, F, G, H, J, L, M, P, R. Each variant retains the basic design of the previous one, but updates the IR seeker, systems, and munitions.
The AIM-9X was a next-generation step. Compared to the AIM-9M design from the 1990s, it was completely redesigned and became operational in 2003. Its innovations include:
- High off-boresight capability — The pilot does not need to point the aircraft at the target; they can fire sideways using the helmet-mounted display (JHMCS).
- Thrust vector control — The missile performs very rapid maneuvers after launch; over 60g of G-force at peak.
- Image IR seeker — Older IR seekers only detect heat sources; the AIM-9X sees the silhouette of the enemy aircraft and is immune to flare countermeasures.
- Block II — Data link, post-launch updates, range of ≈35 km.
- Block III target — Dual-band IR seeker, extended range.
Turkey’s perspective: Turkish F-16s have AIM-9X in inventory; a local alternative BOZDOĞAN (collaboration of TÜBİTAK SAGE / ASELSAN) was developed for the KAAN. BOZDOĞAN is in the same category — a short-range IR-guided air-to-air missile compatible with helmet-mounted displays.
