The General Command of the Libyan National Army (LNA) has signed a contract with a Turkish company for the first phase of an integrated land border management and surveillance system. According to a statement issued on July 20, 2026, by the Military Media Division of the General Command in Benghazi, the first phase of the project will cover 275 kilometers of Libya’s land borders.

The statement noted that the process is being carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar. The name of the Turkish company, the contract value, and the details of the technologies to be employed were not disclosed in the official announcement.

What the system aims for

According to the official statement, the integrated system aims to strengthen the fight against human trafficking, irregular migration, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, organized crime, and other cross-border criminal activities. Such integrated solutions typically combine fixed surveillance towers, electro-optical/thermal cameras, and radars, with sensor data aggregated in a command and control center.

Why it matters

Libya shares thousands of kilometers of land borders with Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia. The deserts in the south and east of the country have long been considered sensitive to smuggling and the movement of armed groups. Monitoring the borders with technology aims to enhance observation capabilities in this vast and challenging terrain.

The contract indicates the continued presence of a Turkish defense and technology company in the North African border security market. In recent years, Turkey has offered integrated border surveillance and command and control solutions to several countries; as the details have not been disclosed, the scope of this contract will be clarified in subsequent phases.
