L-SAM: South Korea’s Long-Range High-Altitude Ballistic Defense
Yazı Özetini Göster

The L-SAM is developed by South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and LIG Nex1 for high-altitude long-range air and ballistic defense. Designed to engage North Korea’s Nodong and Hwasong missile families, it forms the top tier of South Korea’s layered defense architecture.

South Korea’s Layered Architecture

South Korean defense has three tiers: Patriot PAC-3 (low-medium altitude), M-SAM Cheongung II (medium), L-SAM (high altitude + ballistic). L-SAM is the apex tier, targeting a band comparable to THAAD and Arrow 3.

Development Progress

L-SAM development launched in 2016 and completed critical phase tests in the early 2020s. Indigenous ballistic defense capacity is part of South Korea’s strategy to reduce reliance on US THAAD deployments.

Turkey’s ROKETSAN SİPER, targeting 100+ km range, is positioned as the domestic counterpart to L-SAM. Both programs aim to deliver indigenous ballistic defense capability over the medium-to-long term.
