An Israeli army strike on the tents of displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip has killed at least 40 people.
According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli fighter jets struck the tents of displaced people located near the warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) northwest of Rafah.
According to eyewitnesses, the Israeli army attacked the camp and fired at least eight missiles.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip reported that at least 40 people were killed and dozens were injured in the attack.
Civil defense crews are trying to extinguish the fire that broke out as a result of the bombing and rescue people trapped under the rubble.
The Israeli army, in turn, stated that the strike was in accordance with international law and was carried out against “legitimate targets.”
An army spokesperson said that two senior Hamas commanders were killed in the attack and that reports of civilian casualties are being reviewed.
The attack occurred two days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah.
Hamas called the attack a “horrific massacre” and urged the international community to take action to stop Israel.
The Palestinian Authority also condemned the attack, calling it part of the “genocidal war that Israel is waging against the Palestinian people.”
