The IRIS-T SLM — a medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed by Diehl Defence — has emerged as one of the most battle-tested Western air defense systems of the 2020s, following its operational deployment in Ukraine where it achieved a reported interception rate exceeding 90% against Russian cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and loitering munitions.

Developed by Diehl Defence, a subsidiary of Germany’s Diehl Group (#82 SIPRI 2025), the IRIS-T SLM provides medium-range protection against air-breathing and ballistic threats at ranges up to 40 km and altitudes up to 20 km.

Technical Specifications

  • Range: up to 40 km (SLM), 80+ km (SLX)
  • Altitude: up to 20 km
  • Missile speed: Mach 3+
  • Guidance: imaging infrared seeker
  • Platform: mobile wheeled launcher

Ukraine received multiple IRIS-T SLM batteries in 2022-2024, marking the system’s first combat deployment. Orders have subsequently surged from NATO members including Germany, Egypt, and Sweden.
