Turkey’s pilots will head to the UK in August for Eurofighter Typhoon training.

Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence said that, under the Eurofighter Typhoon procurement, aircrew are due to be sent to the United Kingdom in August 2026 to begin flight training.

What was announced

According to the ministry, aircrew and maintenance personnel will continue to be sent to the UK on a multi-year basis under the signed contract. In the first phase, aircrew travel to the UK in August 2026 and begin flight training soon after. The RAF is expected to train 10 Turkish instructor pilots and about 100 maintenance instructors.

The ministry said deliveries of the UK-sourced aircraft will begin in 2030, with 6 in 2030, 8 in 2031 and 6 in 2032 — a total of 20 Eurofighter Typhoons for Turkey.

System and process context

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a 4.5-generation multirole fighter built jointly by the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain. Turkey’s procurement advanced after a long diplomatic negotiation, with consortium partner Germany’s stance in the approval process long a decisive factor. Reaching the aircrew- and maintenance-training stage shows the deal has entered concrete implementation.

The Typhoon is expected to fill an upper-mid capability gap alongside Turkey’s F-16 fleet. Its ability to carry the Meteor beyond-visual-range missile gives Turkey a range advantage in air-superiority missions.

Regional and strategic meaning

The Eurofighter buy bridges Turkey’s air-power modernisation until the indigenous KAAN fighter enters service. Until KAAN serial production, the Typhoon, F-16 modernisation (Ozgur) and new procurements will sustain fleet strength. Training Typhoon pilots also builds institutional flight and maintenance experience useful for the later transition to KAAN, while procuring a NATO platform matters for interoperability with allies.
