Malaysia is nearing a contract for the VL MICA air defense system from MBDA for the LCS frigates.
The Ministry of Defense of Malaysia (MINDEF) has entered the final stage of procuring the vertical launch surface-to-air missile VL MICA produced by the French company MBDA, to equip the Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) of the Maharaja Lela class with air defense capabilities. According to Naval News, MINDEF’s Secretary General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali signed a Letter of Acceptance (Surat Setuju Terima / SST) with MBDA France on July 24, 2026, at the Farnborough International Airshow.
MINDEF described the deal as “an important supplementary contract within the LCS project, providing the ships with air defense capabilities.” MBDA, in turn, noted that the contract “should be signed without delay to ensure the production schedule of VL MICA.”
What VL MICA Changes
VL MICA is a vertical launch system that provides ships with 360-degree all-weather air defense. It is capable of targeting anti-ship missiles, precision-guided munitions, aircraft, and drones. The system is offered with two types of guidance heads: active radar (MICA RF) and infrared (MICA IR).
According to Naval News, the range of the classic version reaches 20 km; the VL MICA NG variant with a range of 40 km is not included in the current order from Malaysia. The vertical launch containers, operating on a “fire-and-forget” principle, allow the ship to simultaneously counter threats from all directions.
Long LCS Program
The Maharaja Lela class is based on the Gowind 2500 project by the French DCNS (now Naval Group). Malaysia selected the project at the end of 2011, and a production contract was signed with Boustead Naval Shipyard in July 2014. Despite delays, the program has recently gained momentum: the lead ship Maharaja Lela began sea trials in April 2026, and the third ship was launched in February 2026.
The completion of the procurement of surface-to-air missiles is considered a critical step in transforming a program that has long been criticized for its lack of weapon systems into a combat-capable vessel.
Regional Context
As the modernization of navies in Southeast Asia accelerates, short-range/zone air defense systems of the VL MICA class remain among the priorities of the region’s fleets. The deal indicates ongoing competition among suppliers of similar solutions.
