Malaysia is close to contracting the VL MICA air defense missile from MBDA for the LCS frigates.

The Malaysian Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has reached the final stage of contracting for the vertically launched air defense missile VL MICA from the French company MBDA, to provide the Maharaja Lela class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) with air defense capabilities. According to Naval News, the ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Lukman Hakim, signed the acceptance letter (Surat Setuju Terima / SST) with MBDA France on July 24, 2026, during the Farnborough International Airshow.
The ministry described the deal as “a fundamental supplementary contract for the LCS project that ensures the ships have air defense capabilities.” MBDA confirmed the necessity of “signing the contract without delay to ensure the timeline for the manufacturing of VL MICA.”
What does VL MICA change?
VL MICA is a vertical launch system that provides ships with 360-degree air defense capability in all weather conditions. It can counter anti-ship missiles, precision-guided munitions, aircraft, and drones. The system is offered with two seeker options: active radar (MICA RF) and imaging infrared (MICA IR).
According to figures provided by Naval News, the range of the conventional version reaches 20 kilometers, while Malaysia’s current order does not include the VL MICA NG version with a range of 40 kilometers. The vertical launch containers operating on the “fire-and-forget” principle allow the ship to counter threats from all directions simultaneously.

The Long LCS Program
The Maharaja Lela class is based on the Gowind 2500 design from the French company DCNS (now Naval Group). Malaysia selected the design in late 2011, and the production contract was signed with Boustead Naval Shipyard in July 2014. Despite delays in the program, it has gained momentum recently: the first ship Maharaja Lela began its sea trials in April 2026, while the third ship was launched in February 2026.
Completing the contract for the air defense missile is a critical step in transforming a program that has long been criticized for lacking weapon systems into an operational combat ship.
Regional Framework
With the acceleration of naval modernization in Southeast Asia, point/area air defense systems of the VL MICA class remain a priority for the region’s navies. The deal indicates the ongoing competition among companies offering solutions in the same category.
