AM General Company Profile: The Humvee Maker Returns to JLTV (Defense News Top 100 #99)

Overview
AM General is a United States military-vehicle manufacturer best known as the producer of the HMMWV — the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, universally known as the Humvee. Headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, and owned by the private-equity firm KPS Capital Partners, the company is a focused tactical-wheeled-vehicle specialist rather than a diversified prime. It ranks 99th on the Defense News Top 100 list for 2025, reporting approximately $740 million in revenue, effectively all of it from defence — a 100% defence share that reflects its singular focus.
The company’s significance is twofold: a vast legacy fleet of Humvees in service across dozens of armies, and its 2023 selection to build the next-generation Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) A2, which positions it at the centre of the US light-tactical-vehicle programme for the coming decade.

History
AM General traces its lineage to the Willys-Overland and Kaiser Jeep military-vehicle business, formalised as AM General in 1971. In 1979 the US Army initiated the competition that would define the company: the requirement for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle to replace the ageing Jeep and a patchwork of light trucks. AM General’s design won, and first deliveries began in the mid-1980s. The Humvee became one of the most recognisable military vehicles in the world, produced in hundreds of thousands of units and fielded across multiple decades of operations. The civilian Hummer brand was spun off to General Motors years ago and is unrelated to the company’s current defence work.
Product Inventory
HMMWV (Humvee). The core product remains the Humvee family, now offered in modernised configurations. The vehicle’s long production run created an enormous installed base, and AM General sustains a continuing business in new-build vehicles, recapitalisation and upgrade kits for legacy fleets.
NXT 360 and Humvee modernisation. Recognising that survivability expectations have outgrown the original design, AM General offers upgraded Humvee variants with improved protection, powertrain and electrical capacity — a cost-effective path for operators seeking to extend large existing fleets rather than replace them.
JLTV A2. In February 2023 AM General was selected to produce the JLTV A2, the next production standard of the US light tactical vehicle that pairs Humvee-class mobility with significantly higher protection. The award transferred the programme from its original developer and made AM General the manufacturer for the US Army and Marine Corps fleet going forward, with foreign military sales potential attached.
Mobile firepower. The company has also developed mounted-weapon and mobile-howitzer concepts on its light-vehicle chassis, extending the platform into direct and indirect fire-support roles.
Export Analysis
The Humvee is among the most widely exported military vehicles in history, in service with an estimated 60-plus countries. Its footprint is especially deep in the Middle East and Gulf, where operators including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq have fielded large numbers across decades of procurement and US security assistance. This installed base is a strategic asset: it generates a long sustainment, spares and upgrade tail, and it gives AM General an incumbency advantage when those operators consider modernisation or the JLTV. With the JLTV A2 award, the company gains a higher-protection product to offer the same customer base through foreign military sales, subject to US release processes.
Competitors
In the light tactical wheeled segment AM General’s principal competitor is Oshkosh Defense, the original JLTV developer and a major supplier of medium and heavy tactical trucks. GM Defense competes in the lighter end with the Infantry Squad Vehicle and related designs, and Navistar Defense and General Dynamics are present in adjacent categories. Internationally, vehicles such as the Thales Hawkei and various MRAP-class products compete for protected-light-vehicle requirements. AM General’s differentiator is its singular focus and the unmatched scale of its legacy fleet, against which it leverages incumbency and sustainment depth.
Envanter Media Assessment
AM General is a focused specialist whose fortunes turn on two assets: the enormous global Humvee installed base, and the JLTV A2 production award. The first provides a durable, recurring sustainment-and-upgrade business and an incumbency advantage with dozens of operators; the second restores the company’s position at the leading edge of US light-tactical-vehicle production after losing the original JLTV competition. The strategic risk inherent in a 100%-defence, narrow-portfolio company is concentration: its prospects are tied closely to US programme decisions and to the modernisation choices of legacy Humvee operators. For procurement audiences — particularly the many Gulf and Middle Eastern fleets already operating Humvees — the relevant questions are upgrade-versus-replace economics and the terms under which the JLTV A2 becomes available for export.
