What Is AHEAD Ammunition? Rheinmetall’s Programmable Air-Burst Round Explained

AHEAD (Advanced Hit Efficiency And Destruction) is Rheinmetall’s programmable pre-fragmented air-burst munition designed for 35mm and 30mm guns. Each round carries 152 tungsten sub-projectiles ejected in a programmed burst pattern ahead of the target. The result: a single gun round creates a machine-gun-density kill zone against drones and helicopters.

How It Works

Radar calculates target range and speed. Data passes to the muzzle induction programmer. As the round enters the barrel, the programmer sets the internal timer. The round detonates metres ahead of the target, ejecting 152 tungsten spheres in a cone. A drone or helicopter cannot avoid this cloud; direct-hit APDS against a small, fast drone is nearly impossible by comparison.

AHEAD in Ukraine

The transfer of Gepards to Ukraine made AHEAD ammunition one of 2022-2023’s most critical supply bottlenecks. Swiss export restrictions forced Rheinmetall to develop alternative supply chains outside Switzerland. Despite this, the Gepard-AHEAD combination achieved a higher Shahed-136 kill rate than F-16s or Patriot systems.
