The Libyan National Army signed a contract with a Turkish company for an integrated land border security system.
The General Command of the Libyan National Army (LNA) has signed a contract for the first phase of an integrated land border management and surveillance system with a Turkish company. According to a statement made by the Military Media Unit of the General Command in Benghazi on July 20, 2026, the first phase of the project will cover a 275-kilometer section of Libya’s land borders.
The statement noted that the process is being conducted under the supervision of Deputy Commander General Saddam Haftar. The name of the Turkish company that signed the contract, the contract amount, and details regarding the technologies to be used in the system were not disclosed in the official announcement.
What does the system aim for?
According to the official statement, the integrated system aims to strengthen the fight against human trafficking, irregular migration, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, organized crime, and other cross-border criminal activities. Such integrated border management solutions typically combine fixed surveillance towers, electro-optical/thermal cameras, radars, and sensor data collected at a command-control center.
Why is it important?
Libya shares thousands of kilometers of land borders with Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia. The southern and eastern deserts of the country have long been considered a sensitive area in terms of smuggling and the mobility of armed groups. Monitoring the borders with technology aims to enhance the capacity for control in this vast and challenging geography.
The contract indicates that a Turkish defense/technology company is maintaining its presence in the border security market in North Africa.
