Space launch company Rocket Lab Corporation has signed a $266 million multi-launch agreement with the US Space Force, the largest contract in the company’s history. Under the deal, Rocket Lab will conduct 12 suborbital launches supporting missile defense testing, with an option to add six more flights.

Suborbital launches play a critical role in developing and testing missile defense systems, serving as target-missile simulators, sensor test platforms and interceptor evaluation flights. Rocket Lab’s expanding footprint in this segment aligns with its broader strategy of establishing a firmer foothold in the defense market alongside its commercial launch business.

The Missile Defense Agency and Space Force are working to expand test infrastructure against hypersonic and ballistic missile threats. Sourcing suborbital launch capacity from commercial providers reduces government agencies’ reliance on their own launch infrastructure and allows for higher test cadence — a model that, much as SpaceX has done in the commercial launch market, is turning Rocket Lab into a permanent fixture of the defense supply chain.

Beyond its Electron and Neutron rockets, Rocket Lab is also active in satellite platforms and space systems integration. The Space Force award is one of the latest steps deepening the company’s relationship with the Department of Defense, having previously supported several national security space missions. Expanding test infrastructure is expected to accelerate development and validation of systems such as PAC-3, THAAD, and the future Next Generation Interceptor — meaning allied nations could see faster maturation of systems they may eventually acquire.
