Kalibr what? Russia’s leading missile in naval navigation.

Kalibr
The Russian Kalibr family is a long-range cruise missile equivalent to Tomahawk. A modular system that can be launched from submarines (underwater launch), surface ships, land, and air. It gained international attention by launching missiles at ISIS/Syria targets from small Russian ships in the Caspian Sea at a distance of over 2000 km. It was the main munition for attacks on electrical infrastructure and cities during the war in Ukraine.

What is Kalibr?
Kalibr (in Russian: Калибр, NATO: SS-N-30 and SS-N-27) is a family of strategic cruise missiles produced by the Russian company Novator (under the umbrella of the Tactical Missiles Corporation). It is classified as the Russian equivalent of the American Tomahawk.
The basic variants of the Kalibr family:
- 3M-14T (Land target) — Launched from surface ships, with a range of over 2000 km, with a conventional or nuclear warhead.
- 3M-14K (Submarine launch) — Launched from the submarine’s torpedo tube, with the same range as the previous version.
- 3M-54 Anti-ship — Shorter range (≈220 km), supersonic terminal phase, targets ships.
- 3M-54E1 (For export) — Exported to countries like India, Vietnam, and Algeria with limited range.
- 3M-14E (For export) — Export version with the same range limitations.
Characteristics that make Kalibr strategic:
- Range over 2000 km — Can be launched from small ships the size of corvettes, no need for large vessels.
- Flies at low altitude (≈100 m above ground) — Difficult to detect by radar.
- INS + GPS/GLONASS guidance system; in the terminal phase targeting based on cameras or radar.
- Anti-ship version transitions to supersonic in the terminal phase — Reduces defense response time.
- Standardized vertical launch system UKSK 3S14 on Russian ships — Kalibr or Onyx anti-ship missile can be launched from a single cell.
In Syria, the launch of missiles from small corvettes of the Buyan-M and Kara Kurt classes at targets in Syria over 2000 km away highlighted that small ships can possess strategic strike capability. In Ukraine, it became the main munition for attacks on the electricity grid, infrastructure, and city centers.
