The Israeli army has killed at least 40 people in an attack on the tents of displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Israeli warplanes bombed the tents of displaced civilians near the warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in the northwest of Rafah.

Eyewitnesses said the Israeli army attacked the camp with at least eight rockets.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that at least 40 people were killed and dozens were injured in the attack.

Civil defense teams are trying to extinguish the fire that broke out as a result of the bombing and rescue those trapped under the rubble.

The Israeli army, however, claimed that the attack was in line with international law and targeted “legitimate targets.”

An army spokesperson said that two senior Hamas officials were killed in the strike and that claims of civilian casualties are under review.

The attack came two days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to immediately halt its offensive in Rafah.

Hamas described the attack as a “horrific massacre” and called on the international community to stop Israel.

The Palestinian Presidency also condemned the attack, stating it is part of Israel’s “war of genocide against the Palestinian people.”
