What Is the Büffel ARV? The Armoured Recovery Vehicle Supporting the Leopard 2 Fleet
The Büffel (German: Buffalo, officially Bergepanzer 3) is the armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) developed by Rheinmetall and KMW on the Leopard 2A4 chassis. Sharing the same automotive, armour and logistical family as Leopard 2, the Büffel can tow, doze, lift and perform combat repairs. It serves 12 nations.

Turkey Connection
Turkey deployed Büffels alongside its Leopard 2 fleet during the 2017-18 Operation Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch. They played a critical role in attempting recovery of damaged Leopard 2 tanks in urban terrain — with mixed results that exposed the difficulty of armoured recovery in built-up areas.
