The Israeli military killed at least 40 people in an attack targeting tents for displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, Israeli warplanes bombed the tents of displaced civilians near the warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), northwest of Rafah.

Eyewitnesses said the Israeli military attacked the camp with at least eight missiles.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza announced that at least 40 people were killed and dozens were injured in the attack.

Civil defense crews are trying to extinguish the fire that broke out as a result of the bombing and rescue those trapped under the rubble.

The Israeli military, however, claimed the attack was consistent with international law and targeted “legitimate targets.”

An army spokesperson said that two senior Hamas commanders were killed in the strike, and that claims of civilian casualties are under review.

The attack comes two days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah.

Hamas described the attack as a “horrific massacre” and called on the international community to take action to stop Israel.

The Palestinian Presidency also condemned the attack, calling it part of “the genocidal war being waged by Israel against the Palestinian people.”
