At least 40 people have been killed in an Israeli army strike targeting tents for displaced Palestinians in the city of Rafah, southern Gaza Strip.

According to the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, Israeli warplanes struck tents for displaced people located near the warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) northwest of Rafah.

According to eyewitnesses, the Israeli army attacked the camp and fired at least eight missiles.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip reported at least 40 people killed and dozens injured in the attack.

Civil defense crews are working to extinguish the fire that broke out as a result of the shelling and rescue those trapped under the rubble.

The Israeli military, for its part, stated that the strike was in line with international law and carried out against “legitimate targets.”

An army spokesperson said that two senior Hamas commanders were killed in the attack, and that reports concerning civilian casualties are under review.

The attack came two days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Rafah.

Hamas described the attack as a “horrific massacre” and urged the international community to take action to stop Israel.

The Palestinian Authority also condemned the attack, describing it as part of “the genocidal war waged by Israel against the Palestinian people.”
