ZIPKIN & Sungur vs Stinger & Igla: The MANPADS and Short-Range Air Defence Comparison

ZIPKIN & Sungur vs Stinger & Igla: The MANPADS and Short-Range Air Defence Comparison
Cheap drones and helicopters changed the air-defence equation. The man-portable and short-range air-defence segment — where ZIPKIN and Sungur compete with Stinger and Igla — is now the most active piece of the global SAM market.

Why The Segment Matters Now
Russian-pattern attack helicopters and low-flying combat UAVs created the demand. The MANPADS that defended Stinger-era mujahideen is the same class that now hunts Shahed-136 drones. Production capacity for Stinger is constrained — Raytheon restarted the line in 2023 after a 20-year pause. That gap created export-market space.
Sungur — Türkiye’s Modern Answer
Sungur uses a dual-band imaging infrared seeker, soft-launch and a fragmentation warhead optimised for both aircraft and small UAVs. The same missile mounts on a man-portable launcher, on the ZIPKIN remote-controlled vehicle pedestal, and on naval point-defence mounts — a one-missile-many-platforms approach competitors do not match in the same package.
Stinger — The Benchmark, Supply-Constrained
FIM-92 remains the most battle-tested MANPADS in the world. Block I and Block II improvements (the latter still maturing) keep it competitive against modern countermeasures. Export approvals are slow; production capacity is the real bottleneck.
Igla / Igla-S — Volume And Sanctions
The Igla family is widely distributed, cheap and combat-proven across multiple conflicts. The Igla-S two-colour seeker is a meaningful improvement. The political problem is the same as every Russian export today.
Verdict for Export Buyers
Stinger if you can get it and you can wait. Igla / Igla-S only if Russian sustainment is acceptable. Sungur / ZIPKIN if you want a modern dual-band IIR MANPADS that scales from one soldier to a vehicle to a ship, available now with open export channels.
