What Is RENK AG? The Transmission Company Behind the Leopard 2 — and Turkey’s Altay Problem

RENK AG is Germany’s Augsburg-based transmission manufacturer and the invisible backbone of NATO’s armoured vehicle fleets. It produces the transmissions for the Leopard 2, Boxer and Lynx KF41 — and sits at the centre of Turkey’s Altay MBT programme’s most sensitive technology transfer dispute. As a wholly owned Rheinmetall subsidiary, RENK is the de facto monopoly supplier of Western military vehicle transmissions.

The Altay Connection
Turkey’s Altay MBT targeted the RENK HSWL 295TM transmission — the same unit fitted to Leopard 2. The technology transfer broke down multiple times: German export restrictions tightened after Turkey’s S-400 acquisition; Turkey then launched a domestic transmission programme (ROKETSAN/BMC). As of 2024, whether the series-production Altay uses a domestic or RENK transmission remains unresolved. The episode illustrates why transmission dependency is a strategic vulnerability for any armoured programme.
