What is DF-17? China’s maneuverable hypersonic ballistic missile.

DF-17
DF-17 (Dong Feng-17) is a hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile in the arsenal of the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF). The difference from conventional ballistic missiles is that it carries a hypersonic warhead DF-ZF (HGV — hypersonic glide vehicle). After exiting the atmosphere, it can maneuver at speeds exceeding Mach 5+ and glides at low altitudes, bypassing conventional defenses against ballistic missiles . It was officially unveiled in 2019. It is the herald of the hypersonic weapons era.

What is DF-17?
DF-17 (Dong Feng-17, “East Wind-17”) is a medium-range ballistic missile in the arsenal of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Its NATO designation is CSS-22. The manufacturer is CASIC (China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation).
The maneuverable warhead DF-ZF (previously known as “WU-14”) is what distinguishes DF-17 from conventional ballistic missiles (HGV — hypersonic glide vehicle). Its operation method:
- The missile is launched outside the atmosphere like conventional ballistic missiles.
- At a certain altitude, the DF-ZF warhead separates.
- The warhead enters the atmosphere, but instead of transitioning to a straight descent like ballistic missiles, it glides in the atmosphere using its fins.
- During gliding, it changes direction and maneuvers. Its speed is approximately Mach 5-10.
This maneuverability allows it to bypass conventional defenses against ballistic missiles. Systems like Patriot, THAAD, Aegis BMD calculate the predictable trajectory of incoming ballistic missiles and intercept them. Meanwhile, HGVs like DF-ZF follow an unpredictable path by maneuvering at any time. For this reason, hypersonic weapons are considered “game changers.”
Strategic targets:
- Taiwan, U.S. bases in Japan, Guam — within the range of Pacific command.
- U.S. aircraft carriers — large platforms in open areas.
- Can carry a nuclear or conventional warhead.
In 2019, DF-17 was officially revealed during a military parade marking the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. U.S. defense analysts consider DF-17 to be “the biggest concern for the United States in the Pacific.” Additionally, Turkish ballistic missile programs like BORA-4 and TAYFUN Block-4 are targeting hypersonic HGV technology in the long term.
