The Hellenic Navy has signed a contract with Thales to rebuild the mission systems of four Hydra-class frigates from the German-designed MEKO 200 family. The agreement signifies the repositioning of modernized Greek platforms in the naval balance of the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to a news report by Defence Industry Europe dated May 25, 2026, the General Directorate of Defence Investments and Armaments of Greece has finalized the “Mid-Life Upgrade” contract for the Hydra-class frigates with Thales. The monetary value of the contract has not been disclosed to the public; however, the scope of work includes a complete overhaul of the ships’ sensor and command-control backbone.

Hydra Class: The Greek Branch of the MEKO 200 Family

According to open-source data, the Hydra class is the Greek variant of the MEKO 200 family developed by the German company Blohm+Voss. The first ship entered service in 1992, and the fourth was completed at Greek shipyards in the late 1990s. Currently, the platforms named Limnos, Hydra, Spetsai, and Psara serve as the backbone surface units of the Hellenic Navy, armed with Harpoon anti-ship missiles, RIM-7 Sea Sparrow air defense missiles, and a 127 mm OTO Melara gun.

The approximately 30-year service life has led to the inadequacy of the mission systems against contemporary threats—especially low-altitude anti-ship missiles and drone swarms. The modernization package aims to fill this gap.

Renewed Backbone: Tacticos, NS100, and STIR 1.2 EO Mk2

According to Thales, the package centers around three systems. The first is the Tacticos Combat Management System, used by over 25 naval forces within NATO. Tacticos integrates data from sensors and provides decision support to the commander; the new version particularly emphasizes multi-threat and data interoperability capabilities.

The second main system is the NS100, a software-defined AESA radar offering dual-axis multi-beam capabilities. The radar, used for medium and long-range situational awareness, provides simultaneous multi-tracking capability against modern air threats. The third system is the STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 for fire control; it offers short-range high precision with its dual-band radar and integrated electro-optical suite.

Assessment from Turkey’s Perspective

The Greek fleet, stationed opposite the Turkish Naval Forces in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean, is creating a new equation with a significant leap in its sensor capabilities. When evaluated alongside the Hydra modernization, Greece’s ongoing procurement of Belharra (FDI HN), and the updates of the existing S-class submarines, it appears that the Greek navy is largely tying its sensor and command-control inventory to the French-Dutch Thales ecosystem in the medium term.

For the Turkish defense industry, both the position of the domestic ADVENT combat management system competing with Tacticos in export markets and the sensor architecture of the MİLGEM family gain importance for comparative analysis. The progress shown by ASELSAN and HAVELSAN in dual-band AESA radar and electro-optical fire control solutions continues to be one of the critical links in maintaining regional balance without unilateral shifts.

Contract Timeline

Vincent Megaides, Thales’ Country Director for Greece, stated in his announcement that “this new operational baseline built around the latest version of Tacticos will serve as a reference point for the future capabilities of the Hellenic Navy.” The company emphasized its over 50-year presence in Greece and local industrial partnerships. It was reported that the execution phase of the works will begin soon; however, the completion timeline has not been disclosed.
