An external pod is one of the most versatile concepts in modern defense — a self-contained, interchangeable module that transforms a standard platform into a specialized mission system in minutes.
What Is a Pod?
A pod (Turkish: pod) is an external product used on munitions or platforms that is detachable and expendable when needed. It is a self-contained external module — housing sensors, weapons, electronics, or countermeasures — that attaches to a platform’s hardpoint and can be removed, replaced, or expended without modifying the base platform.
Types of Defense Pods
- Targeting pods: FLIR + laser designator for PGM delivery (SNIPER, LITENING, ASELPOD)
- Electronic warfare (EW) pods: jamming and self-protection (ALQ-131, HAVASOJ-pod)
- Reconnaissance pods: multi-spectral imaging sensors for ISR missions
- Gun pods: external cannon systems on aircraft or helicopters
