Leopard 2
What Is the Leopard 2?
The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank designed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. Combining powerful firepower, advanced composite armor, and excellent mobility, it has become one of the most widely operated modern Western tanks, with operators across Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and Asia.
History
Development began in the 1970s, and the Leopard 2 entered Bundeswehr service in 1979. Successive variants — 2A4, 2A5, 2A6, 2A7, and the latest 2A8 — have introduced thicker composite armor, longer 120 mm guns, advanced fire-control, active protection, and modern situational-awareness systems. The tank has been used in combat in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine.

Leopard 2 in Türkiye
Türkiye operates a fleet of Leopard 2A4 tanks acquired from Germany in the early 2000s, used by Turkish Land Forces units in conventional and counter-terrorism roles.
