Frigate
What Is a Frigate?
A frigate is a multi-purpose warship capable of conducting air defense, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations. Larger and more capable than a corvette but smaller and more numerous than a destroyer, the frigate is the workhorse of most modern navies, including the Turkish Naval Forces.
History
The term ‘frigate’ has shifted in meaning over the centuries. The modern frigate emerged after the Second World War as a dedicated anti-submarine escort, evolving by the late 20th century into the multi-mission combatant we know today. Türkiye operates frigates derived from Western designs (Perry, MEKO) and indigenous designs (İSTİF-class) developed under the MİLGEM family.
Capabilities
- Long-range air defense with vertical-launch missiles
- Anti-surface engagements with anti-ship missiles such as ATMACA
- Anti-submarine warfare with hull and towed sonars, torpedoes, and helicopters
- Helicopter operations from a stern flight deck and hangar
- Network-centric warfare via combat management systems like HAVELSAN ADVENT
Typical Armament
- Main gun (76 mm or 127 mm)
- VLS for air-defense missiles (ESSM, Standard, MICA)
- Anti-ship missile launchers (ATMACA, Harpoon, Exocet)
- Torpedo tubes and ASW rocket launchers
- CIWS such as Phalanx, RAM, or Goalkeeper
Frigates in Türkiye
Turkish Naval Forces operate G-class (Perry), Barbaros (MEKO 200) frigates, and the new indigenous İSTİF-class frigates derived from MİLGEM. The İSTİF-class — TCG Istanbul leading — combines indigenous radars, the ADVENT combat management system, and Turkish-made weapons including the ATMACA anti-ship missile.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a frigate and a corvette?
Corvettes are smaller, typically below 2,500 tonnes, and focus on coastal defense. Frigates are larger, more capable, and can operate in blue-water environments with full air-defense and ASW capabilities.
Does Türkiye build its own frigates?
Yes — the İSTİF-class frigates (TCG Istanbul and successors) are domestically designed and built under the MİLGEM family, with indigenous radars, CMS, and weapons.
What is the main Turkish anti-ship missile used on frigates?
ATMACA, developed by ROKETSAN, has replaced Harpoon as the primary anti-ship missile on modern Turkish frigates.
